Pre-Interview Tips for Pharmacy Professionals | Tip #1

with Tom Alig | Vice President of Staffing at Indispensable Health

Hi, I am Tom Alig, VP of Staffing with Indispensable Health. I’ve been recruiting pharmacists and pharmacy technicians since 2004, and I’ve seen the things good candidates do to separate themselves, and I’ve seen the mistakes that some candidates make.

This is the first in a series of short videos on pre-interview tips for pharmacy positions.

Today’s Tip: Think Big Picture

After advertising for a position, I will typically get a handful of people who email me and ask, “Where is the job and how much does it pay?”

Do not do this.

Yes, the pay is important. It’s very important. But when the first thing I hear from you is, “Where is it and how much does it pay?” then I think you will quit any job, including the one you’re asking about, the moment someone offers you more money.

In addition, you may want to think about the benefits of having a conversation with the company that posted the position. The job they currently have posted may not be exactly what you’re looking for right now, but having an initial conversation will get your foot in the door with that organization. This conversation will inform the prospective employer about what you’re looking for, what your strengths are, and give a general idea of the type of position that would make a good fit for you.

Within a month this employer might have a new position they need to fill and before this new job ever gets advertised, you might get a call to see if you’re interested. That initial conversation can set the stage for you to hear about a position before it ever gets posted online. During my years overseeing Indispensable Health’s staffing department, I have hired many pharmacy professionals this way.
